It’s a question more and more gardeners are asking: could a backyard garden realistically feed a household if supply chains were disrupted?

A few days ago I was walking slowly through the garden.

It had been a busy week and, if I’m honest, I was just looking for a bit of peace and quiet.

I wasn’t there to fix anything.
Not to weed anything.
Not to harvest anything.

Just to observe.

Sometimes the best thing you can do in a garden is walk through it without a plan. When you stop rushing, you start noticing things again.

The tomatoes in the greenhouse were pushing out new side shoots.
The dahlias were looking happy after a bit of rain.
My oyster mushroom patch was going wild… although the slugs had clearly found it first.

And as I walked past one of the garden beds, a thought crossed my mind.

One of those quiet thoughts that lingers for a while.

If the supermarkets shut tomorrow… could this garden actually feed us?

Not just vegetables for flavour.

Not just a few fresh ingredients for dinner.

But real food.

Food that could actually sustain a household.

The more I thought about it, the more I realised something interesting.

Most home gardens — even very beautiful ones — aren’t really designed to feed people.

They’re designed to supplement meals.

And there’s nothing wrong with that.

But it does lead to an interesting conversation.

Because there’s a big difference between a vegetable garden and a food-producing garden.


The Big Misunderstanding in Home Gardening

If you walk through most backyard gardens, you’ll usually see a very familiar set of crops:

Tomatoes
Lettuce
Herbs
Cucumbers
Zucchini
Capsicum
Strawberries

These are wonderful crops. We grow many of them ourselves.

They add flavour, freshness and nutrients to meals.

But they’re not necessarily high-energy foods.

When people imagine growing their own food, they usually picture a colourful raised garden bed filled with vegetables like these.

And those gardens absolutely improve meals.

They can reduce grocery bills.
They can improve nutrition.
They can make food taste better.

But from a practical perspective, something important becomes clear.

Most common garden vegetables provide very few calories.

They provide vitamins.
They provide minerals.
They provide fibre.

But they don’t provide much energy.

And energy is something our bodies need every single day.

Calories vs Vegetables

This is where gardening quietly intersects with nutrition.

Our bodies run on calories.

Calories are simply units of energy, and different foods contain very different amounts.

For example:

Lettuce contains roughly 15 calories per 100 grams.

Tomatoes have about 18 calories per 100 grams.

Zucchini sits around 17 calories per 100 grams.

These foods are incredibly healthy. They’re packed with nutrients and hydration.

But if you tried to meet your daily energy needs from lettuce alone, you’d be eating an enormous bowl of salad all day long.

And there’s a good reason for that.

Lettuce is mostly water.

Now compare that with crops that historically fed entire populations.

Potatoes contain roughly 77 calories per 100 grams.

Sweet potatoes contain around 86 calories per 100 grams.

Corn sits around 96 calories per 100 grams.

And dried beans can contain 300–350 calories per 100 grams.

Those numbers tell an interesting story.

Historically, the crops that sustained civilizations fell into a few categories:

Starches.
Grains.
Legumes.

These are the crops that provide real energy.

You could almost divide garden crops into two categories.

Support crops and fuel crops.

Support crops make meals better.
They add flavour, colour and nutrients.

Tomatoes.
Herbs.
Lettuce.
Cucumbers.

But fuel crops are different.

They are the crops that historically fed communities.

Potatoes.
Corn.
Beans.
Grains.

Most home gardens are beautifully designed for flavour.

But very few are designed for fuel.

What Real Food Gardens Often Grow

If you look at gardens around the world that actually sustain households, you’ll start to notice a pattern.

They often include more energy-dense crops.

Root crops like:

Potatoes
Sweet potatoes
Carrots
Parsnips
Yams

These crops store energy underground.

You’ll also see legumes like:

Beans
Peas
Lentils

Legumes are fascinating because they provide both energy and protein.

And then there are grains and starch crops.

Corn is one of the most famous examples. It has fed communities for thousands of years and can be dried and stored for long periods.

Some crops even provide fats — like sunflower seeds or nuts in certain climates.

The point isn’t that every backyard needs to become a farm.

But understanding these categories changes how we look at gardens.

Because a garden that looks productive might not actually produce much energy-dense food.


The Storage Problem Most Gardens Ignore

Another piece of the puzzle is storage.

Even if a garden produces plenty of vegetables, there’s another important question:

How long does that food last?

Some crops are short-life foods.

Lettuce wilts quickly.
Zucchini is best eaten fresh.
Cucumbers don’t last long either.

But some crops were historically grown specifically because they store well.

Potatoes can last for months in the right conditions.

Pumpkins and winter squash store beautifully.

Onions and garlic can be hung with good airflow and used throughout the year.

Dried beans can last for years.

These crops create what you might call a food buffer.

They extend the harvest beyond the growing season.

Many modern gardens don’t consider that at all.


The Space Reality

Here’s another quiet reality that surprises gardeners.

Growing meaningful amounts of food often requires space.

A tomato plant can produce a lovely harvest for a few weeks.

A small herb bed can flavour meals for months.

But crops that provide serious calories often need more room.

Potatoes require garden beds.

Corn grows best in blocks because it relies on wind pollination.

Beans can be incredibly productive, but steady harvests often require multiple plantings.

This doesn’t mean backyard gardens aren’t valuable.

It simply means the role of the garden becomes clearer.

Most modern gardens are designed to provide fresh vegetables and flavour.

But historically, gardens that fed households included crops that produced large quantities of energy-dense food.

Garden design and crop choice quietly determine the outcomes we get.


The Hidden Advantage of Home Gardens

After all of that, it might sound like most gardens are inadequate.

But that’s not really the point.

Because home gardens offer something incredibly valuable.

Even if they don’t produce every calorie we need.

Gardens provide fresh nutrients.

They provide flavour.

They provide diversity in our diets.

But most importantly, they provide skills.

People who grow food understand something fundamental.

They understand how plants behave.

They understand soil.

They understand seasons.

And those skills compound over time.

Someone who grows tomatoes can learn to grow potatoes.

Someone who improves soil can expand into new crops.

Even a small garden builds resilience.


A Small Shift Toward Food Resilience

You don’t need to redesign your entire garden.

You don’t need to become a small-scale farmer.

Sometimes resilience comes from small additions.

Plant a bed of potatoes.

Grow a pumpkin patch.

Try a row of drying beans.

Sunflowers are another wonderful option — beautiful to look at and productive for seed.

These crops quietly increase the amount of energy-dense food your garden produces.

And they integrate easily with most garden systems.

Resilience doesn’t usually come from dramatic changes.

It comes from small, thoughtful ones.


The Real Question

So let’s return to the original thought.

If supermarkets shut tomorrow… could your garden feed you?

For most people, the honest answer is probably not completely.

But that might not be the most useful question.

A better one might be:

Could your garden help feed you?

Could it provide fresh vegetables?

Seasonal harvests?

Skills and confidence around growing food?

Because resilience rarely happens overnight.

It grows slowly.

One garden bed at a time.

One season at a time.

One crop at a time.

And every potato bed, pumpkin vine, or row of beans moves us a little closer to food resilience.
